Whimsical Films for Your Soul
I am always on a lookout for good films to add to my whimsical self-care collection.
But because we are all different, we need different films to satisfy our self-care needs.
Some films help us rest and relax. Others make us feel good about ourselves and the world around us.
But it might be other way round for your friend or loved one. So don’t be afraid to have a few guilty pleasure self-care film that you won’t admit loving even if tortured. 😆
For me, self-care films are those that make me feel warm and fuzzy inside, the genre does not matter. I avoid films that make me anxious or leave me feeling like I’m missing out on something big.
In this blog post, I’ll share five films (and/or TV series) that I consider self-care. These are the ones that I rewatch couple of times a year especially when feeling low. I’ve also chosen them for their whimsical nature—a bit of magic is exactly what I love in self-care films.
Let’s dive in!
Film 1: The Good Place
While technically a TV series, The Good Place is pure whimsical joy. I binge-watched the first season in just a couple of days (season two wasn’t out yet), and it gave me exactly what I needed.
It’s weird, whimsical, and raises fascinating questions about morality. What does it mean to be good? Can good deeds erase past wrongs? Is doing nothing bad but also nothing good enough? These questions are fun to ponder without feeling overwhelming. The comedy keeps things light, and I laughed out loud many times.
I rewatch The Good Place often, though not always in full—sometimes just the first and last episodes or my favourite moments in between. If you love magic, mystery, and a sense of “what’s going to happen next?”, I highly recommend it.
Film 2: The Good Witch
This long-running franchise started as a series of films before evolving into a TV show. Watching The Good Witch, I can’t help but admire the protagonist. She’s calm, wise, and full of inner strength and charm. Anxiety doesn’t seem to exist in her world.
There’s a bit of magic to her character—she always knows what to say, as if she’s attuned to something beyond the ordinary. But it also inspires me to think that, by staying calm and not letting anxiety take over, I could notice more and tap into a similar wisdom.
This series motivates me to become a nicer person—someone others can come to for kind words and advice, free of emotional defensiveness. If you enjoy a bit of witchiness, family dynamics, and charming small-town settings, The Good Witch is perfect for you.
Film 3: La La Land
I’ll admit, I didn’t like La La Land at first. When it came out, everyone raved about it, and I tend to avoid films that are overly hyped. For a long time, I only caught bits and pieces while my husband watched it.
Eventually, though, I gave it a proper chance, and it surprised me. The music, the dancing, the sunshine, and the vibrant colours and Ryan Gosling 🥰 - it’s like eating your favourite chocolate - you feel exhilarated before, during and after.
Now, whenever I feel a bit down, I turn to La La Land. it gives me exactly what I need. That’s the sign of a good self-care film for me - it always delivers.
Film 4: Groundhog Day
This might not seem like an obvious choice, but I adore Groundhog Day. I also love films with a similar premise—where someone is forced to relive the same day and learn life lessons along the way.
Groundhog Day is funny, clever, and thought-provoking. It encourages you to reflect on your own choices in a light-hearted way. What would you do if you could relive the same day? What would you buy? How would you spend your time? I love pondering those questions because they’re so far removed from reality.
This film is like taking a mini holiday in my mind, imagining all the possibilities. After watching it, I always feel like I’ve visited many wonderful places all at once.
Film 5: The Holiday
My final recommendation another Christmas goldie - The Holiday. Like La La Land, it’s full of sunshine, music, and a cosy atmosphere.
What I love most is how the characters take risks and embrace change. Both main heroines go with this crazy last minute idea to swap houses for Christmas but it also transforms their lives.
The story reminds me that there are always other options—other doors to open, other good people to meet.
And there you have it—my five whimsical self-care films. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
Final Thoughts on Whimsical Self-Care Films
As a project manager and psychologist, I spend a lot of time reading serious literature, articles, and books.
When it comes to self-care films, I want something that gives me exactly what I need. I don’t care about trends or what’s popular among Instagram influencers or celebrities.
What matters is how the film makes me feel—warm, cosy, and ready to tackle life’s challenges again.
Self-care films are like little pills for my soul, making me feel good inside.
What are your favourite whimsical self-care films?
